Course Description

The course will provide an introductory and preparatory framework for those who are or will be called to care for seniors. Learners will include spouses, adult children, friends and relatives of aging adults as well as paid caregivers and senior service organizations.

Learning ObjectivesLearners will work through online and self-paced modules that will help careers to navigate the supports and resources available to seniors and their caregivers. 

There are no formal prerequisites for this course, but completion of English 12 with a minimum grade of “C” or proof of equivalent as outlined in detail on the English Proficiency page is assumed.

Students who register are understood to be confirming successful completion of this expectation.

Course Content

Modules are self paced and online and include the following seniors' care topics:

  • medical terms and conditions
  • healthcare systems
  • personal care and equipment
  • financial and legal considerations
  • housing and advocacy
  • caregiver wellness and supports
Learning ResourcesCourse manual will be provided.
Instruction MethodA Ƶ instructor will guide and support students through optional bi-weekly Zoom sessions and discussion boards. 
InstructorJennifer Mallmes has spent the last 20 years as a caregiver to persons at the end of life, beginning of life and the in-between. Jennifer is a registered Community Health Worker, a birth doula, and a practicing end of life care doula. She received her Bachelor of General Studies in Sociology/Gerontology from SFU in 2009 and is currently completing a Master of Arts in Community Studies. She has developed many courses in partnership with Ƶ, including End of Life Doula and Grief and Bereavement.  Jennifer’s passion for quality care inspired her to share her experience and empower others to fully live out their life.
